My master’s thesis at the Latvian Academy of Art, Piec’ - seš’ - solis - klāt (Five – six – Basic Step), is a series of illustrated books based on my personal observations and experiences attending beginner dance classes in Riga. At the same time, it serves as a portrait of the dance communities and venues in the city. Each book is an artistic interpretation, presented as a visual narrative, focusing on one specific dance style. The six books highlight the learning process—capturing the imperfection, awkwardness, and lack of confidence that come with being a beginner. They offer a unique perspective on the different dance environments, shedding light on the nature and atmosphere of each class.
